Celtic Tale
The Russet Dog
This Celtic tale brings you a merry story of a savvy fox. When her beautiful russet coat becomes a home for annoying fleas, the fox thinks of a clever way how to get rid of them.
Somewhere far away, in the magical Land of Eternal Winter, lived a penguin named Oliver. He spent every day with his best friend, a seal called Minnie. They played, went to school, and got up to all kinds of antics together.
Everyone who lived in the Land of Eternal Winter already knew that the two of them were inseparable. Oliver and Minnie drew pictures in the ice at the water’s edge, caught fish together for breakfast, and chased the snowflakes as they fell. They were a perfect pair.
Oliver was very happy that Minnie kept him company every day. Their friendship meant a lot to him.
But one morning, Minnie started behaving a little oddly during their morning playtime.
"Is there something wrong?" asked Oliver.
"No, no, nothing’s wrong," Minnie replied nervously, "but I think I need to go home now."
Oliver didn't like it all. His seal friend didn’t usually behave like this.
"What could the matter be?" Oliver wondered. "What if she's hiding something from me? I'll follow her and find out!" he said to himself.
He quickly set off after his friend, making sure he stayed far enough behind not to be noticed. He soon realised that Minnie had taken a completely different route home than usual. When Minnie stopped, Oliver hid behind a snow drift and peeked round to see what she was doing.
Nothing happened for a while. Minnie just seemed to be waiting for something. Oliver hopped from foot to foot in impatience. Then all of a sudden he saw a little polar bear running up to the seal. Minnie greeted him with a warm hug, and soon they started playing chase together.
Oliver understood now why Minnie had been behaving so strangely.
"That's not fair!"…
