Little Blue
What does it mean to feel blue, and what can we do if a feeling of sadness suddenly comes over us? This short story about a child’s temporary bout of the blues, shows us a way to interpret this and even overcome it.
In a house in a small village just outside of town lived a father, a mother, and their daughter. From dawn to dusk, both parents worked hard in the fields. When they came home in the evening, all they wanted was some well-deserved relaxation, but they always found a mess. Their little girl was very careless. She did nothing at all to help her parents. No matter what her mum and dad asked her to do, she would not comply.
“What are we going to do?”
They were really good parents and cared a lot about their daughter. But they just couldn’t get along with her. Neither shouting nor pleading would encourage their daughter to behave well. The little girl did not help with anything and also made lots of mess. On top of that, she was rude and would snap-back at her parents.
“I don’t need you. I’ll move somewhere else,” she would threaten.
And whenever she didn't get what she wanted, she would grab the first thing that was at hand and smash it on the ground. Or she would kick her toys in a rage.
“Where does her anger come from?” fretted her desperate mother, sighing and shaking her head.
“When I catch her, I’ll give her a firm talking-to,” said her dad, trying to exercise some authority.
But although no one knew it yet, things were about to change...
One evening, as usual, the little girl began sulking after dinner. She still wanted to hear a fairy tale, but she didn't want to brush her teeth and go to bed. In the end, after a long struggle, her mum managed to get her to sleep.
