When Charlotte was on her way to school with her dad, she spotted two colourful structures up ahead. She could see pink ponies and flying swans.
“Daddy,” she said, tugging on his sleeve. “I think there are some fairground rides over there!”
“Indeed, Charlotte, the funfair starts today. Shall we go and have a quick look?” The little girl nodded enthusiastically and leapt with glee. She couldn’t wait — she loved carousels. They went closer and spent a few minutes watching the workers assemble the rides.
Later that evening, the family went to the funfair together. The rides and stalls were all set-up by then, and loud, cheerful music was coming from every direction.
“I want to try the swan ride and the carousel,” Charlotte said excitedly. “And I’d like to have a stick of candy floss and a doughnut please, Daddy!”
Then her mum chimed in, sharing Charlotte’s enthusiasm: “And you must win me something nice at the throwing game, Daddy.”
Charlotte and her mum headed for the swan ride. Meanwhile, her dad visited one of the side stalls. There he held a small ball in his hand and took careful aim at the tower of stacked cans. BANG, the whole tower crashed to the ground. For that win, he chose a yellow paper rose as his prize. Then he grabbed another ball, aimed, and POP, he knocked over the other tower. For that victory, he chose a red paper rose.
“This one’s for you, darling girl,” he said, running over and presenting the yellow rose to Charlotte with a big smile. “And the red rose is for Mummy. Now, do you want to have a go at throwing, Charlotte?“ The little girl nodded vigorously.
