In the beginning there was nothing, just vast emptiness. Imagine that: no earth, no mountains, no trees, no rivers, no animals, and not even any sky!
God looked at the emptiness and said:
"Let there be light!" And suddenly the emptiness was flooded with wonderful light.
God decided that the light would be called "day" and the darkness would be called "night". And so the first day of the world passed.
On the second day, God decided to create something else, so he made water and separated the water from the sky.
On the third day God said: "Let the water be gathered into one place so that dry land will appear." And can you imagine? All the water in the world pooled into a great ocean, and dry land was formed alongside it. On the land, God created grass, trees, flowers, and fruit. It became green and brimming with life.
To make the world even more beautiful and perfect, on the fourth day God created the sun, moon, and stars. He commanded the sun to shine during the day, and the moon and stars to shine at night.
On the fifth day, God created thousands of fish of all different kinds in the sea and flocks of all sorts of birds in the sky, which made the earth merry with their singing.
Then came the sixth day, when God created all kinds of animals. Antelopes and goats grazing in the grass, lions scampering through the jungle, monkeys in the treetops, even tiny mice huddling by their roots. The whole earth echoed with their voices.
But as beautiful as this world was, there was still something missing.
So God took a piece of clay from the ground and kneaded it into a creature.…
