The cold but sunny weekend was coming soon, so the whole family was looking forward to a trip to the cottage. Parents allowed the children to take one friend each with them so that they wouldn’t be bored. Theo took his classmate Toby and Liz took her friend Tory. The four of them often played together, so they all knew each other well.

They had a long car journey to the mountains and through a dark forest. However, they told each other funny stories to entertain themselves. Recently, the children had had a carnival at school, so they talked about their masks. And, of course, everyone claimed that theirs was the scariest one. They joked happily as the journey passed slowly, and they arrived at the cottage just before dark.

“Wow, this is magical!” the girl sighed as they looked at the wooden shutters.

“But it looks a little spooky,” said Toby, shuddering when he noticed the silhouette of the roof in the twilight.

“Just like from the dark forest!” Theo joined at once with his vivid imagination.

“Haha, have you peed in your trousers yet?” laughed the girls.

But the boys immediately said: “You think we’re scared? Well, rest assured that even if a monster comes out of the forest, we will protect you!” Theo puffed out his chest and pounded it with a clenched fist, making a thumping sound.

“Yes, we will! We’ve got experience with that!” Toby joined in, “Why do you think we watch superhero movies? I’d kick the monster’s bum!”

“Come inside, superheroes,” called their mother and father, laughing, “you must be starving. If you don’t eat, you won’t have enough energy to protect the girls.”

While the parents were cooking dinner, the kids unpacked their backpacks.
